Spring 2007 Reflections On The Playoffs
Reflection on the playoffs
Well, another Lorain County Soccer League playoff has come and gone. The sun and wind burn is not as bad as in the past, which only proves that every time we do this we learn a little more on how to make it a successful event. I would like to take the time to pass my observations about this year’s playoffs on to the participants and staff of the league.
The vast majority of the people at Hamilton Fields on Saturday truly embraced the spirit in which the playoffs were intended to create. The playoffs were intended to be less of a skill gauge and more of a celebration of the season. The participants for the most part realized that the season record was a better indicator of their team’s success than the events of one day. I was truly impressed to see the number of teams that brought tents and picnic supplies the Oberlin. They used this opportunity to enjoy the company of their team and families, as well as play soccer for one last time before beginning the summer vacation activities. The weather cooperated and we had the opportunity to enjoy some great soccer matches. The smile on the player’s faces was the best gauge of how successful we truly have been in running this event.
I would like to thank the staff of the LCSL for helping to run a smooth event once again. Also, we should say thank you to the Oberlin staff for preparing a wonderful site for our event. Thanks to the PSA venders for graciously donating the entries to the National 5v5 tournament. Thanks to Frontline soccer and Challenger Sports for their participation on Saturday. Last but not least thank you to the participants and families for making this a great event.
As the time for me to pass the torch on to the next group of board members I am confident that this event can grow even more. The next board will have the challenges of running the playoffs with the advent of small sided games. I hope everyone will keep in mind that the celebration part of this event is the reason it was, and will be run in the future. Please give the next board the same support that you have shown the current one and the LCSL playoff will always be a successful one.
Lastly, I challenge more members of the LCSL community to get involved the running of our league. Children’s sports do not run themselves; they need good people whose love of the sport pushes them to be involved. Remember why we play the game and what is truly important and the LCSL will always be successful.
Thank you to all,
Brian Terrell
